F is for Fauna & Flora in Free State
Free State is a province that lies in the heart of South Africa and also borders Lesotho. The province is popularly known for it’s rich mineral wealth, making it the 5th largest producer of gold in the world.
Free State province
Climate tends to be very hot in summer, severely cold in winter and the area experiences frequent snowfalls in winter months. When people visit South Africa, they always aim for places like Kruger National Park and Pilanesberg, amongst others to marvel at the wildlife. Well, Free State also has a claim when it comes to fauna and flora. You certainly won’t see all members of the “Big Five” there, except for the white rhino but there is so much else to see.

“Life is like a zebra. There are white, and black stripes on it. When you are on a white stripe walk slowly, enjoy it. When you come to a black stripe raise your collar, shut your eyes, and run as fast as you can go to get to a white one. But, remember, there is always a white stripe after a black one!”

There is also a number of herbaceous plants, more so in the eastern part of the area. Even though the quote below states otherwise…
“Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.”
…go easy with these herb plants:-)
So if you happen to visit SA, don’t forget to pop by in Vrystaat.
I think the Free State is sadly underestimated in terms of it’s tourism potential. There are such spectacular views and places and I wish people would spend more time enjoying it’s own uniqueness, rather than simply driving through to coast. I love the Free State.
True that, it is underestimated. It’s uniqueness is really something to marvel at.
